Sand Key Beach is a beautiful beach for dolphin watching and shelling at low tide. Nearby is the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary (727 391-6211) www.gulfside.com/seabird/ is the largest wild bird hospital in North America and harbors around 500 recuperating sea and birds. Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park is a 168-acre park with diverse wildlife including manatees, bears, deer alligators and otters. The area is filled with wetlands and spring-run streams that originate come from the 45 foot deep Homosassa Spring. Pontoon boats will take you on a tour of the park, although you can also enjoy walking on nature trails. Educational programs offered daily, (904) 628-2311. Hillsborough River State Park is 3400 acres of greenery, wildlife, and a mild river current perfect for lazy canoeing. The park is free and the camping and canoeing are inexpensive. (813) 987 6771.
